Cafe Reading and Library April 27th - May 1st

Hello everyone! Its Mrs. Barton here again with our weekly Café Reading and Library lesson. I hope you and everyone in your family are doing well. This week’s lesson will be a review lesson on making connections. Making connections is when the reader brings information or life experiences they have had and connect it with what they are reading to increase their understanding. Making Connections with Text Attached are two YouTube read alouds. Both books talk about feelings and mindfulness (being present and feeling at peace). Everyone is dealing with a lot right now and it’s good to remind ourselves to take a few breaths and tell ourselves that everything will be okay. I made a lot of connections to these two books. ***Once you click on the link below, remember to skip the ads and expand the screen by clicking on the [ ] in the bottom right hand corner of the read aloud.*** I am Peace by Susan Verde - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXA3837uv3w Happiness: A Children’...

Cafe Reading and Library

Café Reading and Library Hi boys and girls! I hope you are keeping yourselves busy playing and learning. It’s Mrs. Barton (your child’s Teacher Librarian). Every week I usually get the opportunity to read a story, practice a reading strategy, and/or complete a library activity with all of the classes at our school. Since I am unable to do this right now, I will be providing your classroom teacher with a weekly Café Reading or Library skills lesson. Most lessons will have a story link attached or an assigned reading from the reading website – EPIC as well as some activities to go along with the story. Feel free to do whatever you feel comfortable with. Maybe just look at the link together. Maybe discuss the story with your child after or choose to complete an activity listed. This is not meant to put added pressure on any parent, it is just my way to let my students know I am here for them and miss our weekly work sessions. Multiplication Games

Multiplication Dice Toss You will need: 2 dice and counters (use smarties, cheerios, raisins) Player number one rolls the dice. Players multiply the two dice. The first player to say the correct answer out loud collects one counter and then rolls the dice for the next round. In the event of a tie, both players may pick up a counter and the youngest player then rolls the dice for the next round. After a set amount of time, players count up their counters. The player with the most counters is the winner. Multiplication War You will need a deck of cards: Use the aces (aces equal one), twos, threes, fours, fives and tens. You can add the 6,7, 8 and 9 cards to make the game more challenging. Players divide cards evenly between themselves. Players turn over two cards each and then multiply them. The player with the highest product (answer) collects all four cards. In the event of a tie (the same answer) each player turns over two more cards and multiplies them. The player wit...

Easy Playdough Recipe 1/4 cup of salt 3 tablespoons oil 1 cup boiling water 3 cups flour food colouring Mix the salt and oil together. The salt will soak up most of the oil. With help from an adult, pour the boiling water into the salt mixture,  Stir until the salt has dissolved.  Add a few drops of food colouring. Slowly add the flour and keep stirring. A soft dough will form. Kneed the ball of clay on the counter or on a piece of wax paper for about one minute. Store the playdough in a zip lock bag.
A note about school supplies When you pick up your child's supplies please check the bag for the following items:  A yellow duo tang marked phonics. These are new worksheets your child can work on. Please have your child do one or two pages a day. These worksheets will have to last for quite a while as I may not be able to photocopy and distribute any more this year.  A green folder with math worksheets. I will have a different math focus every two weeks. We will be starting with multiplication and division. Do not allow your child to work on the other math worksheets yet. Only multiplication and division.  I will post games and other ideas to help students learn each of the math concepts.  Handwriting booklet. Have your child complete two pages a week. They need to trace over the letters that are there. They also need to practice writing the letters themselves.  I have included a home school spelling scribbler. I will be assigning the students two or...

Today we said "goodbye" to our coho salmon. Mr. Wallace and Mrs. Jones-Gallant had quite a time catching all of the fish and putting them into the bucket. Rob, the fisheries officer, stopped by and collected the bucket of fish.  Later that day we checked the tank and there were about 10 fish swimming around in the tank!!  They had been hiding under the grate. I guess they didn't want to go back to the creek!  We will have to keep feeding them and we will try catching the last few fish another day.
