Cafe Reading May 25th - May 28th

Hi! It’s Mrs. Barton (your Teacher-Librarian). Hope everyone is well and making sure to get outside to enjoy the beautiful weather we are having. This week’s review Café Reading lesson will be the comprehension strategy Compare and Contrast. Compare and Contrast is when readers understand new ideas in text by thinking about how things are alike or different, thus deepening their comprehension. This strategy can be used to compare and contrast (C&C) books you are reading, to C&C characters in a book, and to C&C yourself to a character. Activity 1. Attached are two videos on ‘Amazing Animals’ from National Geographic Kids. I would like you to watch the videos and fill out the Venn Diagram on the next page. Each animal from the videos will be represented on the outer circles where you will write down how the animals are different. In the middle where the circles overlap, you will write down how the animals are the same. The picture above is an example of h...

Cafe Reading May 11th - May 15th

Hello everyone! It’s Mrs. Barton here again with our weekly Café Reading and Library lesson. This week’s lesson will be a review lesson on visualizing. Visualizing is when students listen to or read text and then start to create pictures in their mind or make a mind movie. When readers visualize what is happening in the story, they remember more of what they read or hear. Read - All the World by Liz Garton  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C4IK5B6D4o    This book has great ‘picture’ words (sand, stone, pebble, sun). When I close my eyes, I can visualize (make pictures in my head) those things. Activities 1.      Go for a walk, hike, or bike ride. While you are doing this, look at the trees, the parks, the buildings, the sky, and anything else you see. 2.     After your walk, draw a picture of something that you saw. Close your eyes and try to remember. Visualiz...
